Q1. Explain two ways the characters and/or events fit the action adventure genre.

Q2. Explain how each of the following is used to create;

Camera work, soundtrack, mis-en-scene, and editing.

  One way that the film hurt locker fits the action genre is that the extract shows a bomb being shown which is a key aspect of an action film is as it portrays danger as they are able to quickly cause serious danger. The characters act very cautiously and quickly towards the bomb and this fits the action genre as it’s very fast pace. The fast pace tempo of the scene and the cautious approach the characters have towards the bomb is due to the fact that the bomb is revealed and they draw the guns at him quickly as it presents a threat.

  Another way that the film fits the action adventure genre is through the events and setting of the area that the extract shows. The mise on scene shows damaged dust buildings, gravel and a lot of wastage just scattered on the floor. I presume that all the gravel is due to the previous event that took place, the explosions and gunfire. The extract shows the establishing show of the setting and it shows the ruined buildings from the war which is taking place.

A variation of shots are used throughout the whole scene, firstly there is a point-of-view shot, showing the action from the perspective of the soldiers. There is also an establishing shot from a high up perspective, used to show the audience a general perspective of the whole scene on the ground. There is a frequent use of cutting from one shot to another showing all the different aspects of the action as it happens. Doing this creates continuity editing, which keeps the audience’s attention on the story as the action plays out.

Dolly zoom is also a commonly used technique as the camera zooms in and out on the ‘victim’ who stands still as this happens; he remains the same size on screen throughout. Dolly zoom is used on the victim to show the bombs that are strapped to him; this is a connotation to the audience to let them know something awful could potentially happen.

The sound that is used in this film gives effects of an action adventure film and the sounds fit the aspect of the film, we know this because bombs and gun shots are fired and this is relevant because the film is linked to the army. Also religion is shown as the bomb is about to blow the man starts to pray out loud and this is using the theme religion.
