Q1. Explain two ways the characters and/or events fit the action adventure genre.

Q2. Explain how each of the following is used to create;

Camera work, soundtrack, mis-en-scene, and editing.

One way that the film hurt locker fits the action genre is that the extract shows a bomb being shown which is a key aspect of an action film is as it portrays danger as they are able to quickly cause serious danger. The characters act very cautiously and quickly towards the bomb and this fits the action genre as it’s very fast pace. The fast pace tempo of the scene and the cautious approach the characters have towards the bomb is due to the fact that the bomb is revealed and they draw the guns at him quickly as it presents a threat.

Another way that the film fits the action adventure genre is through the events and setting of the area that the extract shows. The mise on scene shows damaged dust buildings, gravel and a lot of wastage just scattered on the floor. I presume that all the gravel is due to the previous event that took place, the explosions and gunfire. The extract shows the establishing show of the setting and it shows the ruined buildings from the war which is taking place.

A variation of shots are used throughout the whole scene, firstly there is a point-of-view shot, showing the action from the perspective of the soldiers. There is also an establishing shot from a high up perspective, used to show the audience a general perspective of the whole scene on the ground. There is a frequent use of cutting from one shot to another showing all the different aspects of the action as it happens. Doing this creates continuity editing, which keeps the audience’s attention on the story as the action plays out.

Dolly zoom is also a commonly used technique as the camera zooms in and out on the ‘victim’ who stands still as this happens; he remains the same size on screen throughout. Dolly zoom is used on the victim to show the bombs that are strapped to him; this is a connotation to the audience to let them know something awful could potentially happen.

The sound that is used in this film gives effects of an action adventure film and the sounds fit the aspect of the film, we know this because bombs and gun shots are fired and this is relevant because the film is linked to the army. Also religion is shown as the bomb is about to blow the man starts to pray out loud and this is using the theme religion.

Q2. Explain how each of the following is used to create effects:

Soundtrack

The sound track is used to create effects for the audience to create a tense atmosphere that is relevant and fits the genre of the film. When cage is introduced into the film, the background music is a synchronous sound and this is where you, as cage is going into battle. But as it is a battle sound, gun shots and explosions are heard and this is a non-diegetic sound, and there being linked together. This this affects the audience because when they hear guns and explosions, it normally means something bad is going to happen. When cage who is the protagonist is running through the beach, the soundtrack is just a beat that getting repeated and each beat gets faster and this makes the audience believe that something bad is going to as it keeps getting faster.

Editing

Just before cage is taken by the French army, the editing is slow, this is create a tense atmosphere, and this makes the audience feel that something bad is going to happen. When the fighters get onto the beach, the editing speeds up, this is because the scenes are edited together using lots of different shots cut together, this is because a lot of movement is happening on the in the fight scene, this can then  build tension on the audience. Cross-cut editing is also used on the beach, this is when it goes from one action to another, this will build suspense on the audience because there is more than one fighting action.

Q 1.  Explain two ways the characters and/ or events fit the action adventure genre.
Use examples from the extract. [10 marks]
You can tell this is an action adventure film because of the hero fighting the villain. The character cage is the protagonist, this is the character that drives the narrative forward, through the choices they make and the actions they take. During the start if the film it is obvious that he isn’t the best of fighters and he is the underdog, but because he keeps coming back alive he makes progress. This is a convention because in action and adventure the character is being the underdog and the audience thinks he will die. This creates tension because of the expectation that he doesn’t stand a chance without any military training or help. When he doesn’t die, this makes his victory all the more impressive and the movie more entertaining.

Bad Education sitcom which is a comedy set out in the same location, this is inside the classroom with the same characters, this is inside the classroom. This lets the audience gain a relationship with the characters because they will get to know their character traits and how they act: for example, everyone knows Mr wickers is an awful teacher and the audience are just ready for his childish and immature behaviour. One character trait that is represented is the stereotype  ' boff ' this is Jing, she wants to get an education and she try's to tell Mr wickers how to teach. Also a stereotype of 'racism ' is represented, she is an example of an Chinese immigrant. chav is another stereotype, this is a younger lower class person typified brash and loutish behaviour and the wearing of designer clothes  I can relate this to one of the students in Mr Wickes class, who wears chavy clothes and talks in a rude and informal way to interact with others in the class. This shows the audience what it is like being chav and it shows the life of teenage boys living in the area and the way they live there life. But also it brings humour to the audience as they will find it funny the way he is because there not used to it and its something new to them, for example when a the 'chavy'  swears towards Mr Wickes  in front of him, and Mr Wickes  doesn't even care, its humorous  because in a normal life you wouldn't get away with it. audience always come back to this programme because its an exaggerated version of real life. they speak to him as a friend so they get away with everything this is humorous to the audience because all teachers are more strict in real life.

4. (a) Compare how and why two programmes were scheduled on different channels.

State the day, time and channel of each programme.

Channel 4 commissioned the comedy Friday night dinner. Friday Night Dinner is a British television sitcom written by Robert Popper and directed by Steven bendlack. Registered viewers includes half of all 16-24 year olds in the UK, this is because of the humorous language used that is only relevant to people 16-24. They are only on at this time because its the time people 16 and over settle down to watch TV and also its repeats which are on at night, and early hours in the morning are on for when people come home from nights out. They are on after watershed because it has swearing in there and children are not permitted to hear this. Know the audience demographic both genders.

Bad Education is a British sitcom produced by Tiger Aspect Productions for BBC Three production-The first series started airing on 14 August 2012. On 23 August 2012, it was announced that Bad Education would have a second series. The second series began airing on BBC Three on 3. produced by jack Whitehall. The Gender of the audience for Bad Education is predominately male. This is because of the  crude/vulgar content of the situation comedy and the codes/conventions used through out the show. Stereotypically young males  are quite immature and are easily amused by sexual innuendo, which is a used through out Bad Education. Where as the female of the same age group are stereotypically mature and may not be amused by the vulgar content of Bad Education. I believe that the target audience age will span predominately between 16-24 year olds as this is the primary target audience for BBC 3 as a channel. This is the age group for the target audience of Bad Education as the show uses current themes and trends which are commonly found amongst the lives of 16-24 year olds.
